Here at the World of the Wheel Role Play Site men and women can train as Recruits to become Gaidin. They are enrolled from as young as fourteen to begin the structured training which will set them on the path to becoming Gaidin. If the candidate is older than twenty-five at the point of enrolment then they must already have some military experience (This has to pass the Master of Arms at the point of character creation). New Recruits are welcomed from all walks of life although it is uncommon to see Seanchan, Sharan, Aiel, Tuatha'an or Sea Folk Gaidin in Training.
While we are not too restrictive on the kind of background allowed, we would ask that you keep it realistic and in line with expectations.
Once a prospective Recruit enters the Tower they are taken to the office of the Master of Arms (MoA) where they are interviewed and added to the register. If they pass, the MoA will ask questions of the new Recruit to determine their background and make a preliminary assessment on qualities such as strength of mind and character. The new trainee will be expected to make their own way to the living quarters and find an empty billet. He will of course have to report the spot he has chosen and will be barred from shifting wilfully. The barracks are not always full and there are separate rooms for men and women.
The Recruits are housed in low, double story stone buildings with simple thatched roofs and wide windows (which, incidentally, will be shut during winter). Each building contains four rooms per level, with up to eight trainees occupying a room.
The rooms themselves are spartan with purely functional furnishings. Each individual Recruit is entitled a standing wardrobe cum personal storage locker as well as a chest-like footlocker for his/her personal effects. There is also a single clothing stand provided, for the Recruit to utilize as he or she sees fit.
Besides the individually allotted furniture, each room features a large stone fireplace, a long, rectangular oaken table, and eight stools. A four-tiered shoe-rack sits on either side of the only door to the room. Clothes lines run from hooks embedded below the out-ward facing windows.
There is a communal toilet on both ends of each storey. One functions as a bath chamber while the other is for general washing and relieving purposes.
The bath-chamber houses 16 simple copper tubs, as well as a large fire-place for heating water. Each trainee using the baths has to draw his own water and heat it if he or she wishes a warm bath. The stone floor of the chamber is gently inclined toward the centre of the room, where a drain-hole sits.
The other toilet contains wash basins and cubicles, and serves for sanitary needs other than baths.
The bunkhouses themselves are arranged in a pentagon overlooking a central clearing. Of the five buildings making up a cluster, two consist of Recruit bunkhouses. Another two are Armsmen barracks while the last houses a variety of rooms. This last building sits at the base of the pentagon and houses a secure armoury, common games rooms and a kitchenette, as well as store run by a local merchant. On top of these general facilities, the quarters of one of the senior Gaidin are situated in this building. Not a disciplinarian proper, the Gaidin nevertheless acts as a barrack-master and oversees maintenance work, bunk allocations and other administrative tasks while functioning as a mentor and friend to trainees who run into personal issues.
The central clearing is basically a patch of grassy field set aside for leisure activities.
There are currently a total of two barrack clusters in the White Tower, simply known as the North and South cluster, with regard to their orientation. A third cluster, namely the West, is under construction. All Gaidin are housed within the East cluster in single rooms. The East cluster is different in construction from the other three and is physically the closest to the White Tower. The main armoury, stables and military ordnance stores are all within close proximity of the Gaidin barracks.
Recruits are able to have talents. So that authors may receive feedback from other members and the Admin a post should made on the OOC before writing a talent for the first time. Alternately a PM may be sent to the Admin in special circumstances.
