Glossary of Acronyms & Initialisms
Certain acronyms and initialisms - abbreviations formed from the beginning letters of words or word parts - that are commonly used in role playing and in Wheel of Time circles may be used OOC to represent different concepts. Some common acronyms are exclusive to the World of the Wheel.
A brief glossary of some of the more frequent acronyms used around the site are found below:
BT
The Black Tower
1. n. the location of training for Asha'man, Dedicated, and Soldiers. It consists of a selection of buildings near Caemyln covering an area the size of a small village.
2. n. the board board on which any role play within the Black Tower are posted.
GiT
(The) Gaidin in Training
1. n. a collective term used to refer to Initiates and Arms-men training to become Gaidin.
2. n. denotes that a character is an Initiate or Arms-man training to become a Gaidin.
IC
In Character
n. the section of a role play post written from either an omniscient point of view or the point of view of a character within a story.
LoA
Leave of Absence
n. an anticipated time a member spends away from a site.
MRP
Major Role Play
n. a role play - often instigated by site staff - where specific sections of or the whole of the site are affected in character. Major Role Plays may coincide with the launch of a new site feature.
MoA
Master of Arms
1. n. the Gaidin in charge of the Gaidin Barracks. The current Master of Arms is Moriel Gaidin.
2. n. the writer acting as the out of character administrator for the Gaidin Barracks. This would be the writer authoring the in character Master of Arms, which currently is Tal.
MoN
Mistress of Novices
1. n. the Aes Sedai in charge of the Novices and Accepted in the White Tower. It is not completely unknown for a full Aes Sedai to visit the Mistress of Novices for penance. The current Mistress of Novices is Eleanor Darane Sedai.
2. n. the writer acting as the out of character administrator for the White Tower, who would also be authoring the in character Mistress of Novices, currently Helanna.
MoSD
Master of Soldiers and Dedicated
1. n. the Asha'man in charge of the Soldiers and Dedicated in the Black Tower, currently Asha'man Caelis al'Rathon.
2. n. the writer acting as the out of character administrator for the Black Tower, who would also be authoring the in character Master of Soldiers and Dedicated, currently Daria.
NPC
"Non-Participating" Character, "Non-Player" Character
n. a character developed simply to enrich a post or thread, who does not actively write posts from their point of view and may only be included in a Playing Character's posts.
N&A
Novices and Accepted
1. n. the trainees of the White Tower, training to wield the female half of the One Power and either become Aes Sedai, or, if they are not strong enough, to become able to use their power safely.
2. n. the board on which any role play within the Novices and Accepted quarters is posted.
NSOC
"No Specific Owner" character
n. a character from whose point of view may be written a post or section of a post to add to a role play by any writer on the board the NSOC exists on - they have no exclusive owner. See also, NSOCs - What are they, and should I care?.
OOC
Out of Character
1. n. the section of a post is written from the point of view of a user, not in character.
2. n. the board on which out of character discussions - and non-Wheel of Time discussions - may be held.
PC
Playing Character
n. a character that is actively written and owned by one member and can not be played or significantly written into another by any other member without prior permission.
RP
Role Play
1. n. the interaction between one or more characters with themselves and their environment, usually authored by multiple writers.
2. n. the creative writing resulting from interaction between one or more characters with themselves and their environment, usually authored by multiple writers.
3. v. the act of creating such writing.
S&D
Soldiers and Dedicated
1. n. the trainees of the Black Tower studying to use the male half of the One Power and serve as weapons to the Lord Dragon.
2. n. the board on which any role play within the Soldiers and Dedicated quarters is posted.
TB
Tower Barracks
1. n. the grounds within the White Tower where the Initiates and Arms-men complete their training to become Gaidin.
2. n. the board upon which any role plays set within the Tower Barracks are posted.
WoT
Wheel of Time
1. n. the best selling series by Robert Jordan, 'The Wheel of Time'.
2. n. the object - real or metaphorical - that relates to he creation of the lace of ages and reality itself.
WotW
World of the Wheel
1. n. this creative writing website.
2. n. the board on which any out-of-The-Black-and-White Towers role play is performed.
WT
The White Tower
1. n. the location in which the Aes Sedai, Novices and Accepted reside and train, the tallest building in the world, constructed by Ogier after the breaking of the world in the island city of Tar Valon.
2. n. the board on which role play set within the White Tower is performed.
